5 Packing Tips For Your Next Move

February 18, 2019

We’re 3 days out from moving day and It’s finally starting to feel real. While packing, purging, and countless stops to Goodwill are never enjoyable, there’s something about this move that’s felt freeing and dare I say…kinda fun. This will go live after move-in day so hopefully I’ll feel the same then. 😉

We moved during a week where we both had numerous work commitments and family visiting. We struggled with the timing of this and wanted to enjoy my brother’s visit but also feel somewhat settled in our new place. I think we found a good balance and decided to enjoy the time with them during the day and focus on unpacking in the evening. While I’m no packing pro, I learned a few things during this move and wanted to share some tips:

Contents

  • 1 Get all the free boxes
  • 2 Use everything to pack everything
  • 3 Make a plan
  • 4 Accept/hire help
  • 5 Purge before you pack

Get all the free boxes

There is no such thing as too many boxes. I started saving boxes from packages that I’ve received the past month, and I asked colleagues to save their boxes. You can also ask your local grocery store or check Craigslist under the ‘free’ section. Anyone need our extra boxes?

Use everything to pack everything

Packing supplies are expensive – bubble wrap, foam, wardrobe boxes, etc. It all adds up. Be smart about how you pack and use the supplies you already have. When packing glassware and fragile pieces, I used t-shirts, blankets, and towels to secure them. I also used tissue paper or newspaper that I had laying around my house. I used wooden baskets to pack shoes and I used my extra large tote bags to pack makeup products. Get creative with it.

Make a plan

There are so many little things to do when moving that it can feel completely overwhelming. Changing your insurance policy, updating your billing address for bank/credit cards, setting up internet/cable, electric – block a few hours in one day and knock these all out. You’ll feel so relieved knowing it’s done.

Accept/hire help

When we first started the moving process I had every intention of doing it ourselves. It wasn’t until about a week before moving that I realized moving is a HUGE task. I decided that having help would be super helpful and I’d rather spend a little bit of $$ to save hours of my time. Since we were moving during the weekday and most of our friends work, we hired Lugg and it was the best decision we made. Use code for LEONA at booking for $20 off.

Purge before you pack

This is probably the best advice I can give you. If you’re not that excited about something you’re packing, you probably won’t be that excited to un-pack it either. De-clutter you’re space and only bring pieces to your new home that bring you complete joy.

I hope these tips were helpful. Now it’s time to un-pack and decorate our new home. xx

Experiences > Things If you want to travel more Experiences > Things

If you want to travel more in 2024, now is a great time to start. Shift the holiday focus from gifts under the tree and prioritize experiences that allow you to create new memories together

Experience based gifts have always been important to us. We’ve been traveling together for 6+ years and experiencing things together is by far our favorite way to spend time together. Together we’ve explored ~14 countries and grown both individually and as a couple

Finding ways to save where we can is huge. We don’t have the desire to buy new things all the time. I also take advantage of credit cards, travel deals, and stack rewards (ex: a majority of our flights are booked with points). I have a free guide packed with lots of info to help you travel more for less

Which do you value more, experiences or things? 💭

I can’t be the only one like this… If you me I can’t be the only one like this…

If you mention going on a trip around me, you better be ready to follow through

📍What’s the most spontaneous trip you’ve ever booked?

Story time: Last week my friend called me and said she had to spend $150 on United if she wanted to hit status for 2024. That reminded me that I had $400 in credit to use by the end of the year, so I jokingly said “should we meet up somewhere?”

Long story short, by the end of the day we had hotel, flights, and dinner reservations booked and now i’m in Vegas for my last (spontaneous) trip of 2023 💃

Friends who book the flights are my favorite 🫶🏼
