Healthy habits I live by

March 24, 2020

It’s been a while since I’ve shared a blog post, but something about being cooped up in the house these past few weeks has me craving to write more. I’m not sure why I don’t share much of my fitness/health outside of the occasional IG story, but it’s such a huge part of my life.  I love working out, cooking healthy and finding ways to implement small habits that positively impact my life. Being home has proven how important some of these habits are so I thought I’d share what my days have been looking like. While they’re simple, doing these things every day allows me to show up as the best version of myself and I’m much nicer for it. Just ask CJ 😉

Work out first thing in the morning

I wake up around 7:30 am, chug a glass of water, and workout before I find a reason not to. I try not to work, check my emails, or get on social before I workout or else it just drains me. I try to dedicate the first hour of every morning to myself and check-in with my body and mind.

Eat a healthy breakfast

I like to work out on an empty stomach so obviously the earlier I workout, the sooner I can eat.  Most days I make a smoothie, I shared the recipe on TikTok.  If I’m not having a smoothie, I have avocado toast with an egg or coconut yogurt with chia seeds and fruit. It’s easier to make healthier choices in the morning so I like to start off on a good note so that it positively impacts the rest of my day.

Plan workouts in advance

My friends think I’m crazy, but I plan everything. If it’s not on the calendar, it’s not happening. I like to look at the week ahead each Sunday and choose which classes I’ll do that week. I typically go to the gym 2x a week, yoga/pilates 2-3x a week. Over the past few weeks,  CJ and I been doing programs like Insanity and CorePower Yoga in our living room every morning. If you’re having trouble staying consistent, switch things up. I like to meet friends for classes, try new studios, etc. Keep it fun. Here is a list of studios offering free online classes right now.

Prep healthy dinners

Similar to breakfast, keep it healthy. CJ and I grocery shop about 2x a week and plan out our meals based on what we bought. It’s fun to switch things up but we have a few recipes on hand that are our easy go tos: sweet potato tacos, buddha bowls, mushroom risotto, home-made bone broth. Maybe during this lock up, I’ll share more recipes and what we’re cooking. I also think it’s important to note that we have veggies or fruit with almost every meal.

Don’t buy shitty food

Since we’re on the topic of food, let me just remind you that you don’t need to buy unhealthy snacks. I don’t buy candy, ice cream, brownies, etc. If it’s in the house I will 100% eat it and I don’t need that pressure. My go-to sweet snacks are raspberries with dark chocolate morsels, a bar (KIND bar and RXBar are my favs), or fresh fruit. If I’m craving something else I will walk to the local market, which makes me think about whether or not I actually need it, and if I do decide to buy something I’ll get a single serving instead of the family size. Nobody needs a gallon of ice cream. Drink some water.

Aim for daily walks

Quarantine has enforced a walk a day rule in our house. I’m thankful that CJ has a shit ton of energy because I hardly ever want to go for a walk.   Even when I don’t want to go, it’s been nice to get out and I feel so refreshed after.

Wind down

Lately, I’ve been loving doing my skincare routine around 8pm. I enjoy the process of pampering myself, trying new products, and I find it to be really relaxing. Sometimes I’ll do a 30-minute yoga class. Whatever relaxes you, do that and make it work every night (or most nights).

But don’t wine down

I have two rules when it comes to drinking. First, I limit drinking during the weeknights – it adds up and is unnecessary. Second, choose between alcohol or dessert, don’t do both unless it’s a special occasion.  Sweets and alcohol are empty calories and they add up fast. I know that I’d much rather have a spicy marg than something sweet.

Get your beauty sleep

I need  8-9 hours of sleep or else I am MISERABLE to be around. I aim to be in bed by 10/11 most nights.  Most of the time, this means turning down social events or late dinners with friends. I literally won’t go out to eat past 7pm or else it just throws my schedule off. In order for me to be as productive as possible, be nice, feel my best, and get in my workout, I need all of these things to fall into place.

Experiences > Things If you want to travel more Experiences > Things

If you want to travel more in 2024, now is a great time to start. Shift the holiday focus from gifts under the tree and prioritize experiences that allow you to create new memories together

Experience based gifts have always been important to us. We’ve been traveling together for 6+ years and experiencing things together is by far our favorite way to spend time together. Together we’ve explored ~14 countries and grown both individually and as a couple

Finding ways to save where we can is huge. We don’t have the desire to buy new things all the time. I also take advantage of credit cards, travel deals, and stack rewards (ex: a majority of our flights are booked with points). I have a free guide packed with lots of info to help you travel more for less

Which do you value more, experiences or things? 💭

I can’t be the only one like this… If you me I can’t be the only one like this…

If you mention going on a trip around me, you better be ready to follow through

📍What’s the most spontaneous trip you’ve ever booked?

Story time: Last week my friend called me and said she had to spend $150 on United if she wanted to hit status for 2024. That reminded me that I had $400 in credit to use by the end of the year, so I jokingly said “should we meet up somewhere?”

Long story short, by the end of the day we had hotel, flights, and dinner reservations booked and now i’m in Vegas for my last (spontaneous) trip of 2023 💃

Friends who book the flights are my favorite 🫶🏼
