Mexico City Day Trip: The Pyramids at Teotihuacán

November 28, 2018
This past week we were in Mexico City celebrating CJ’s 30th birthday! This was our second trip and I was so excited to be able to enjoy our time and explore (aka. eat)  a little more rather than cramming everything! Check out the complete Mexico City Travel Guide.

    • 2.1 Public Transit:
    • 2.2 Guided Tour:
  • 3 What you’ll do on your day trip:
  • 4 What to eat in Teotihuacan:

Before you go

Hours: Tuesday-Sunday 9 am to 5 pm
Entrance fee:  70 pesos –included in our tour
What to bring: water bottle, sunscreen, sunglasses/hat, snacks
Best time to visit: arrive early in the morning to avoid the mid-day sun and crowds of tour buses that come in the afternoon
Timing: plan to be at the pyramids for around 3-4 hours.

Booking a tour vs Public transportation:

Being 30 miles from the city makes it fairly easy to visit without a tour and there are several options for getting to Teotihuacán.

Public Transit:
  1. Take the metro to Autobuses del Norte station
  2. Walk across the street to the North Central Bus Terminal
  3. At the bus terminal, head left to gate 8 and look for the bus company called Autobuses Teotihuacan
  4. Buy a ticket ($6USD) to Los Piramides. The bus departs about every 20 minutes
  5. The ticket to the pyramids is only valid during a specific time, but you can take any bus on your way back
  6. The trip takes about an hour
Guided Tour:

We opted for a private tour for our group, which I actually really loved. We booked the 6 hour round trip tour through StyleWalk for $620 and had such a great experience. Our guide was super knowledgeable and let us do our own thing – he told us about the history of the pyramids and then let us explore on our own for a few hours. We met back up when we were ready to leave.  If you go over in time, it’s an additional $80 per hour.

What you’ll do on your day trip:

You’ll see one the largest pyramid in the world, the Pyramid of the Sun.  You’ll climb up the pyramid which is a little over 200 feet.
There are also several ruins as well as museums on the property that are included in your entrance fee.
Teotihuacan is massive. Prepare to walk several miles and hike up hundreds of stairs during your trip.

What to eat in Teotihuacan:

While we did pack some snacks and water, we were excited to eat lunch at La Gruta. There are some amazing restaurants near by but we were really looking forward to eating crickets in a cave. It was a little cooler that day but if you’re going in the summer, this is the perfect spot to cool down.

If you want to travel more in 2024, now is a great time to start. Shift the holiday focus from gifts under the tree and prioritize experiences that allow you to create new memories together

Experience based gifts have always been important to us. We’ve been traveling together for 6+ years and experiencing things together is by far our favorite way to spend time together. Together we’ve explored ~14 countries and grown both individually and as a couple

Finding ways to save where we can is huge. We don’t have the desire to buy new things all the time. I also take advantage of credit cards, travel deals, and stack rewards (ex: a majority of our flights are booked with points). I have a free guide packed with lots of info to help you travel more for less

Which do you value more, experiences or things? 💭

If you mention going on a trip around me, you better be ready to follow through

📍What’s the most spontaneous trip you’ve ever booked?

Story time: Last week my friend called me and said she had to spend $150 on United if she wanted to hit status for 2024. That reminded me that I had $400 in credit to use by the end of the year, so I jokingly said “should we meet up somewhere?”

Long story short, by the end of the day we had hotel, flights, and dinner reservations booked and now i’m in Vegas for my last (spontaneous) trip of 2023 💃

Friends who book the flights are my favorite 🫶🏼

      Hi Susan,
I booked with Victor at this company: https://www.stylewalkmexico.com.

I booked a 6 hour tour of the pyramids (we had a large group with us) and then spent 1.5 hours grabbing lunch at La Gruta, which is about 5 minutes away from the pyramids. You could rent a car or book something through this company as well. They are incredibly flexible and lovely to work with.

Hope that helps! Have so much fun

Hi Jill! I’m not sure how you’d go about renting a wheelchair, but I’d highly recommend you bring one with you as it could prove to be difficult to find a place to rent from. I found this article for you: https://apieceoftravel.com/teotihuacan-by-wheelchair-the-accessible-guide/. Hopefully it’s insightful. Have a lovely trip.
